Tahniah Dato' NC


Skudai, September 30th: Dato’ Prof. Ir. Dr Zaini Ujang has been appointed Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) vice-chancellor effective from October 1st for a three-year term.
Before the appointment, Dato’ Prof. Zaini holds the post of UTM deputy vice-chancellor for research and innovation and is believed to be the youngest person to head a Malaysian public university.


“I thank the Government for being bold enough to appoint a relatively young person to the post of VC. I will aim to improve the standard of higher education and implement the National Higher Education Strategic Plan,” he was quoted saying. His appointment was recommended by a selection committee headed by United Nations University-International Institute for Global Health director and former Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia VC Tan Sri Dr Mohamed Salleh Mohamed Yasin.

He replaces Tan Sri Prof. Dr. Mohd Zulkifli Tan Sri Mohd Ghazali who has held the post of UTM Vice Chancellor since December 2000. Well-known as a professional environmental engineer and for his research on water quality, he is also a columnist for Berita Harian through his column ‘Minda Lestari’ that discusses current environmental issues.

He was born in Johol, Negri Sembilan, and received his first degree in chemical engineering from UTM and has two master’s degrees from UTM and the University of Newcastle.He received his PhD in environmental engineering from Newcastle and started his academic career in UTM in 1988 and was appointed a commissioner to the newly formed National Commission on Water Services in February last year. He is also the Malaysian Water Association deputy president.
He also had the honour of serving as special officer to then Education Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak from 1997 to 1998 and was involved in higher education policy matters, particularly the corporatisation of public universities.
